Many candidates make the mistake of trying to memorize answers for the IELTS speaking test. The examiner is trained to detect memorized answers and it will lower your score. Here's what actually works.
The 4 IELTS Speaking Criteria
1. Fluency & Coherence — Can you speak smoothly with logical flow?
2. Lexical Resource — Do you use a range of vocabulary?
3. Grammar Range & Accuracy — Can you use different tenses and structures?
4. Pronunciation — Can you be clearly understood?
7 Practical Tips
1. Don't memorize — practice topics. Know common IELTS topics (family, education, technology, environment) and practice speaking about them naturally.
2. Extend your answers. Don't give one-word answers. Use the PEEL structure: Point, Explanation, Example, Link back.
3. Use a range of tenses. Show the examiner you know past, present, and future by naturally incorporating them.
4. Learn topic-specific vocabulary. For "environment," know: sustainable, carbon footprint, renewable energy, ecological impact.
5. Don't worry about accent. IELTS tests clarity, not accent. Your Egyptian accent is perfectly fine.
6. Use discourse markers. "On the other hand," "As a result," "For instance" — these show coherence and boost your score.
7. Practice out loud every day. Thinking about English is not the same as speaking it. You must practice speaking.
